How to Get Your Forklift Licence

Forklifts are used in a variety of industries in Canada. There is a huge demand for forklift operators. From warehouses to construction sites, there are many potential opportunities for work. In order to operate heavy machinery, Canada has several regulations in place to ensure worker safety.

Regulations for Forklift Operators in Canada

The Canadian Standards Association (CSA) is in charge of the implementation of safety standards for forklift operators. Any aspiring forklift operator needs to complete the CSA Standard B335-15, Industrial Lift Truck Operator Training, and have passed the test before they can operate a forklift.

Additionally, workers need to brush up on their skills every three years by attending upgrade training sessions.

Benefits of Earning Your Forklift Licence

Forklift operators are in high demand across various logistics sectors in Canada. Earning your licence means you increase your chances of finding employment across a growing sector. The rising demand for forklift operators has meant their salaries have also risen with average salaries of around $20.41 per hour. The high demand also means you may be able to find a job in a setting you enjoy – whether it’s a construction company specializing in difficult terrains or in a port loading and unloading ships.

How to Earn Your Forklift Licence

While legally employers are responsible for ensuring that their workers are trained to the highest standards, earning your forklift licence on your own can boost your chances of earning better wages right from the get-go.

Requirements for forklift licences vary slightly from province to province but the overall procedure to obtain one is fairly consistent across board.

Find the Right Course

Because of the minor variations between provinces, it’s important to do your research before you sign up for a course – especially if you’re planning on doing the course independently of any employer. Read up about the requirements for your region and choose a course accordingly.

Attend Classroom Sessions

The first part of your forklift training will usually be theoretical lessons that may be held online or in person, depending on the program you choose. Theoretical classes introduce you to various aspects of the machines themselves, various safety regulations and more. After completing these lessons, you will be required to pass a written examination to move to the next stage.

Complete Your Manual Training

This is where you get the hands-on experience of using forklifts that you need. You will typically learn how to conduct safety checks on your machine, how to safely lift and unload packages of various shapes and sizes, and how to move goods from one place to another. You will also learn how to handle a forklift in tight spaces as well as on uneven terrain.

Get in as much practice as you can at this stage. The experience you get here can be invaluable later on.

Receive Your Licence

Once you have completed your hands-on training, your instructor will evaluate all you have learnt via a practical test. You receive your licence after the instructor is satisfied that you have met all the requirements through the evaluation. You may also need to complete hearing and vision tests before receiving your licence.
