However, with the Coronavirus, we have learnt that working from home is more beneficial than we thought. People find that they prefer to work at home as they can be more flexible with their schedules. Remote working was rare about a decade ago, it was really only available to accommodate families in specific cases. Nonetheless, in today’s society, teleconferencing and telework have advanced dramatically to the point where some businesses are thriving completely with remote learning.
Employees are working in remote positions, either part-time or full time, with a large percentage of the workforce looking to find job opportunities with flexible schedules. Companies are embracing a new way of working, increasingly using adaptable work options as a convenient way to gain new employees.
Is Remote Working Effective?
People feel that they work better without constant supervision because they personally feel more productive which causes them to actually be more productive. Airtasker surveyed 1,004 full-time employees – 505 which are remote working employees.
- Remote employees to work an additional 1.4 days more per month over in-office employees. This means they work nearly 17 additional days in a year.
- 15 percent of remote workers stated that their boss distracted them from getting work done, which is less than 22 percent of office-based employees stating the same thing.
- Remote employees take longer breaks on average than in-office workers (22 minutes versus 18 minutes), however, they work an additional 10 minutes a day.
- Office workers are unproductive for roughly 37 minutes in a day, this excludes their lunch break. Remote workers are unproductive for only 27 minutes of the workday.
Business News Daily also reported workers who feel higher levels of stress and more difficulty in finding a balance between their work-life and home-life over office-based workers.
Remote working can be extremely effective but should be treated like every new job. Employers should be re-training employees who have transitioned into remote working, to make the switch easier and less bombarding. It has to be put into practice correctly, and it may not be the most ideal situation for every employee or every business. COVID-19 forced businesses to practice remote working at a faster rate than most would have preferred, however, it was the push that made companies more successful and employees more cheerful.
